IEBC explains why it will use digital register in August polls
By evans.maritim, June 20, 2022Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has said it will use a digital voter system in the upcoming August 9 general election.
While responding to a question by Raila Odinga Presidential Campaign Board member Paul Mwangi, IEBC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Marjan Hussein said the digital register is just a replica of the hardcopy register.
“Based on our 2017 general election experience, using the digital register will reduce malpractices. The presiding officer will not be able to see who has not voted.
“This will reduce cases of people voting for people who did not appear to vote,” Marjan said.
The CEO said the commission has adequately prepared to conduct the election and it has 60, 000 Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits ready to be deployed.

“In 2017, we used 44, 000 KIEMS kits. We have added 16 000 more to ensure that we have a replacement for those that may fail during the voting day,” he said.
The commission currently has 22,120,458 registered voters.
“We are going to certify the register and gazette either tomorrow (June 21) or the day after tomorrow,” IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said.
