Hundreds of latrines in Kisii cave in due to rain

More than 200 pit latrines in 80 schools in Kisii County have collapsed due to heavy rain in the area.

Primary and secondary schools are affected, said County Director of Education Philp Chirchir said.

He appealed to school heads and boards to ensure the latrines are repaired before schools reopen.

Three classrooms at Nyabite ACK Primary School in Bobasi constituency collapsed during a windy storm, he added.

He said the government had allocated money to reconstruct damaged infrastructure in schools.

“Strong winds flattened a perimeter wall at Nyamagesa DEP Primary School,” Chirchir said.

He added that the wall will be reconstructed before schools reopen.

Some pupils will have to share classrooms once schools reopen, said Nyabite board of management chairman Stanslaus Ondieki.

Shortage of classrooms

Standing next to Principal Nelson Obonyo, Ondieki said Pre-Primary One and Two pupils will learn under trees due to a shortage of classrooms.

“Grade One and Two learners will have to share classrooms and teachers will teach in shifts,” Ondieki told People Daily.

Public Health officers and those from Public Works condemned the classrooms in October last year after they developed cracks, Ondieki said.

Obonyo said the school has 360 pupils, stressing that there is overcrowding and they will suffer even more once schools reopen.

“My worry is that rain will disrupt learners being taught under trees and this will affect their education,” Obonyo said.

He urged Bobasi  MP Innocent Obiri to help reconstruct the classrooms at the 63-year-old school.
