House help, five others in Sh100m theft case arraigned

By , July 8, 2022

A house help accused of stealing more than Sh100 million from her employer in Lang’ata was yesterday charged afresh alongside five other people.

Shellomett Kiprono Jerop was charged alongside Caleb Nagomere Rasto, Agaziva Brain Kenneth, Jackline Minayo Kinzi and Eunice Akinyi Moi after the Prosecution consolidated the matter.

The five are accused of conspiring to steal from one Samar AlKindy Sh4 million in cash, US$806,000, jewellery worth Sh4 million, copies of log books and title deeds all valued at Sh104 million. They were released on a bond of Sh 7 million, which was later reviewed to Sh1 million.

Yesterday, their lawyer wanted the court to review the bond term conditions, which required them to produce a Civil Servant Surety saying it was unconstitutional and was violating their rights.

Probation report

The complainant through her lawyer Dunstan Omari however opposed the application arguing that the country has at least 500,000 civil servants and those were the ones the court wanted the accused persons to choose from. “The surety the court wants was from within the country and not from Nigeria or Cambodia,” said Omari.

He asked trial Magistrate Elector Riany to consider the probation report that was available in court and review the bond terms either way.

The prosecution had opposed the release of the house help on bond; saying she was a flight risk as she fled from Lang’ata in Nairobi to Baringo County after stealing from her employer and has no place of abode that she can be traced from.

The theft case was reported by one Athanus Mutiso Makau an employee of Impression Advertising Limited on behalf of Samar Alkindy who was the complainant in the matter. Alkindy who is a resident at Lang’ata left the country on April 29 for Oman.
