Since the death of Kenya’s founding president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, on August 22, 1978, many Kenyans have harboured a quiet belief that the eighth month of the year is jinxed. The month has, over the decades, witnessed a string of tragedies that have left lasting scars on the national memory.

On August 23, 2003, former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa died in London after months of treatment. Five years earlier, on August 7, 1998, truck bombs exploded almost simultaneously at the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, killing more than 200 people and injuring over 4,000.

This year, August has once again brought grim headlines. Since the start of the month, Kenya has recorded a spate of fatal crashes—both on the roads and in the skies—that have claimed dozens of lives in just days.

Road Crash Overview (Jan–Aug 10, 2025)

Between January 1 and August 10, 2025, a total of 2,933 Kenyans have died in traffic accidents across the country, according to official data.

The carnage spiked sharply in early August, with 80 deaths recorded in just four days—a surge that has prompted the government to launch emergency road safety audits.

Major Incidents in Early August

August 4 – Gilgil, Nakuru County: Five people, including an infant, died in a crash at Mbaruk along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway.

August 6 – Kisii County: Two people were killed and 11 injured when a lorry lost control and rammed into stationary vehicles and a motorcycle at Daraja Mbili Market.

August 7 – Naivasha, Nakuru County: Nine people died in a collision between a Kenya Pipeline Company staff bus and a Kenya Railways cargo train at Morendat.

August 7 – Githurai/Mwihoko, Kiambu County: A Cessna Citation 560XL air ambulance operated by AMREF Flying Doctors crashed minutes after take-off from Wilson Airport, killing four people onboard and two on the ground. Several others were injured. The plane had lost radio and radar contact just three minutes into its flight to Hargeisa before plunging into a residential building and bursting into flames.

August 8 – Kisumu County: At least 25 people, including a 10-year-old girl, were killed when a bus ferrying mourners from Kakamega overturned near a roundabout and rolled into a ditch. Additional deaths were reported at the hospital.

August 9 – Kajiado County: Seven people died and eight were injured in a collision between a matatu and a lorry at Korompoi along the Kitengela–Isinya Road.

Causes and Concerns

Preliminary investigations point to familiar culprits on Kenyan roads—speeding, reckless overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance, driver fatigue, and dangerous road conditions.

The Kisumu bus tragedy has been directly linked to excessive speed on a sharp approach to a roundabout, which caused the driver to lose control.

In response to the recent spike in fatalities, authorities are fast-tracking measures under the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024–2028, including stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved driver training, and targeted safety campaigns.

 The Air Crash

The AMREF Flying Doctors air ambulance disaster remains under investigation. Early reports indicate the aircraft lost communication and control shortly after take-off before diving into a residential block. AMREF and aviation authorities are working jointly to determine the cause and prevent similar tragedies.
