The Homa Bay affordable Housing project yesterday received international approval for championing environmentally friendly building strategies.

The project, a collaboration between the National government under the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and the Homa Bay County government, was awarded the EDGE Certification by the International Finance Corporation, for the design of its green affordable housing initiative.

The country’s sustainable housing project is the first government project to receive the EDGE green building certification in Kenya.

The project is estimated to save 30 per cent energy, 35 per cent water and 56 per cent less embodied energy in materials, with a CO2 saving of 0.3t per year compared to traditional building practices.

The EDGE preliminary certificate was presented to Governor Gladys Wanga at the Governor’s Park in Homa Bay town.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Wanga noted that the housing project strategy mirrors well with the county’s Climate Change Policy framework as it sought to promote climate resilient infrastructure as part of the County’s integrated development plan.

“Our policy and legislative framework on climate change calls for the development of climate resilient housing in the County,” she said.
