Health care workers in Homa Bay County have accused the County Assembly of meddling in the management of health care facilities.

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), the Kenya Union of Laboratories Technicians (KULT) and Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) have accused Members of the County Assembly of interfering in their work .

Addressing the press in Homa Bay town yesterday, the unionists led by KUCO branch chairperson Stephen Omondi and KNUN executive secretary Omondi Nyonje said the politicisation of health care facilities had compromised service delivery.

Omondi accused the Health committee chaired by Kojwach MCA Joan Ogada of interfering in the running of the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.

Service delivery

The committee, which has been investigating the status of the hospital, has recommended the sacking of Health Executive Richard Muga citing incompetence and gross misconduct.

“We are telling the County Assembly to stop interfering with the management of health services.

The residents are interested in getting better service delivery,” said Omondi.

Nyonje told the MCAs to keep off the management of health services and concentrate on their legislative role, saying their involvement was a stumbling block to revamping  of the health care sector in the county.

KUCO branch secretary Philip Mbom said health workers cannot operate well in an environment of political interference.

Mbom claimed the ward Reps are against their talks with the County Executive and Senate committee on Health to address their grievances among them poor working conditions.

At the same time, the union officials opposed the County Assembly Health committee’s recommendation that former Homa Bay county referral hospital CEO Dr Lilian Kochola, who was sacked over alleged incompetence, be reinstated.
