Health facilities categorisation to align with SHIF kicks off

The government has kicked off a nationwide categorisation exercise for health facilities in line with the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) under the Health Act.
The Health Act has six categories of hospitals, with Level One being community facilities run by certified medical clinical officers, Level Two (health facilities), Level Three (Health centres), Level Four (district hospitals), Level Five (district referral hospitals) and Level Six (national referral hospitals).
Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) CEO, Dr David Kariuki said the exercise which started on Monday this week, is meant to ensure quality health services for all Kenyans.
The categorisation being conducted by the Council and other health regulatory bodies, covers all level 3 to level 6 facilities and is based on criteria such as services provided, human resource capacity infrastructure, medical equipment, and administrative support services. “This initiative aligns with the Council’s mandate to regulate health facilities and ensure quality health services for all Kenyans,” said Kariuki.
