Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has continued to throw his weight behind former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s African Union Chairmanship (AUC) bid.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Kaluma stated that Raila is the perfect person to occupy the seat as he is a leader who stands for something greater than Kenya.

Kaluma went on to list the former prime minister’s achievements and milestones which he says have significantly contributed to the country’s growth and infrastructure. He, at the same time, commended his adverse knowledge of African states noting that it is a key indicator that he means well for the continent.

Asked on the progress of Raila’s campaigns and if President William Ruto has done enough as promised, Kaluma noted that the campaigns which have hit a fever pitch have been one of the best because the president has traversed across the continent to ask for votes.

He also mentioned that Raila put his best foot forward and met various heads of state to campaign for the position, which has come to the homestretch.

“Raila’s campaigns have gone very well, in fact it has been one of the best, I don’t know a single head of state in Africa who has not been met or asked for votes, I don’t know a single state Raila has not visited either alone or with the President, so if we are to look at it in terms of campaigns or the vision he has you know Raila’s ideals, sit with him even for five minutes and he will very easily jump out of Kenya to talk about what will benefit other countries in Africa; his knowledge about African states, and their history in the continent is quite deep, and by the way, when he talks about it, it is not something artificial or something he is just starting during this time he is bidding the AUC chair, he is somebody who understands Africa very well.

“You know he has served as the high representative in charge of infrastructure in Africa, you know Raila’s history in Kenya initially, as an opposition leader at times also as a government official, minister for Energy, we know the reforms he brought when he was minister for energy, in fact people forget but things like Rural electrification program and this are the electricity infrastructure lighting up Kenya per his vision, we know what Raila did thereafter as Minister for Roads and infrastructure, if you see the bypasses in. Nairobi, Thika Road, people forget that these were done in Raila’s time,” Kaluma said.
