National football team Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi is happy to be alive after he was involved in a grisly road accident on the Kakamega-Kapsabet road on Tuesday afternoon, a few metres from where former world 400m hurdles champion Nicholas Bett died in a similar cash a few yers back.

Speaking to People Sport from his hospital bed at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital, Matasi who assured football fans that he was out of danger, recounted the experience and said it was a miracle for him to come out of the wreckage that was declared a write-off, alive.

“I thank God for helping me come out of that wreckage alive. It is like a miracle, I have no fracture or cuts and I expect to return to action in less than three weeks,” said Matasi who was returning to Nairobi after attending the burial of Domitila Musanga Serenge, the mother to former soccer players Fred and Joe Serenge and their sister Judy Serenge who is a retired volleyball player.

Matasi said: “We were coming from a burial in Kakamega when the car suffered a tyre burst and rolled three times.

The response from good Samaritans was quick, but my wife had suffered a broken limb and my son had two deep cuts on his hands, they have, however, received good treatment and are our of danger.”

According to Kakamega County CEC Collins Matemba, the football star who plies his trade for Ethiopia giants St. Georges, was last afternoon stable and out of danger and even wanted to be discharged.

“I can confirm that Matasi is stable and out of danger after the road accident he suffered in Lessos on Tuesday.

In fact he wanted the hospital to discharge him, but the hospital management thought it was wise if he stays for one more night as his child and wife continue to get proper care after suffering injuries in the accident,” said Matemba.

Meanwhile, a cross-section of leaders from Kakamega County yesterday comforted Matasi and his family following a road crash.

The leaders said Matasi was one of the ga“I wish to extend my pole to Patrick following injuries that he, his wife and child sustained in a road accident on Tuesday,” said  Kakamega Deputy Governor Philip Kutima.

Ikolomani MP Benard Shinali said Matasi was one of the dependable soccer players in the country and wished him quick recovery.

“Patrick has done a commendable duty for this country since his days at AFC Leopards.

He is irreplaceable which is why we are praying that he gets well, alongside his family members,” said Shinali who is the Captain of Bunge FC.

The sentiments were echoed by former players Nick Yakhama, Fred Serenge and former coach Alfred Imonje.
