Govt steps up intervention measures as drought threatens lives and livestock
Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Ruku has assured Kenyans that the government has sufficient relief food to ensure that no lives are lost amid rising concerns over food security.
Speaking while issuing relief food in Turkana County on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, CS Ruku said that the government is ready to ensure that it protects the livelihood of Kenyans.
“This coordinated response shows the government’s relentless commitment to ensuring that no life is lost due to drought or food insecurity. We are working with all stakeholders to reach every family in need and ensure that relief is timely, adequate, and effective,” Ruku said.

The reassurance comes as the government escalates immediate and long-term solutions to the perennial droughts affecting Turkana County, one of the hardest-hit regions in the country.
The cabinet secretary further said that a multi-pronged drought response initiative was flagged off, involving a fleet of relief food supplies, hay for livestock, and cash transfers to vulnerable families across the county.
Collaborative efforts

The cabinet secretary further added that water agencies are on the ground providing both short-term and sustainable long-term water solutions for human consumption and livestock.
Ruku added that humanitarian organisations are delivering nutritional supplements for children and lactating mothers, while the County Government of Turkana provides medical care to victims of the devastating drought.
The CS highlighted that this coordinated effort reflects a holistic approach, combining national-level preparedness with county-level interventions. The initiative aims not only to alleviate immediate suffering but also to build long-term resilience against recurring droughts in Turkana and other vulnerable regions.
The government continues to urge citizens to report urgent needs to local authorities to ensure prompt support, reinforcing a message of preparedness and compassion amid the challenging dry season.
