Govt says it has mapped out regions notorious for sparking pre-elections violence in Nyanza, Western

The government has completed mapping out regions notorious for sparking pre-election chaos in Western and Nyanza region.

According to regional Commissioners for Nyanza and Western, they have a comprehensive security strategy that would see huge security machinery moved to already identified hotspots.

Magu Mutindika(Nyanza)and Esther Maina(Western) said that Kisumu, Migori and Siaya are the most problematic, dangerous and chaotic during party primaries and general elections.

Speaking during the Lake region economic Forum inference, the administrators said unless they deal with those regions, they may lead to instability.

The leaders were reacting to a question posed to them by LREB chair Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya on preparedness of the security ahead of the 2022 polls.

Mutindika singled out Kisii, Transmara, Kuria and Migori town as breeding grounds for chaos, especially during polls.

“As a security Committee we have leant from the experiences and do not want to take chances. Even areas that brew interethnic conflicts are equally on our radar,” Mutindika said.

He further put on notice politicians issuing inflammatory remarks to invoke the public.

“I would like to request the political class to mind what they say in regions perceived to be opponents backyards, add that in most cases it’s the selective language used by the politicians that makes the public to overreact.


I would wish that as we move forward, let politicians not to provoke the situations that can lead to chaos,” Mutindika said.

Maina on her part said they won’t hesitate to lock up in cells politicians whose visitors cause chaos in Western and Nyanza counties.

“Let the so-called powerful politicians that hosts other leaders seeking for various positions be warned that should their visitors causes violence, they will be held responsible,” she added.

She stated that her Western region has formed peace committee forums up to the wards level which includes religious leaders, opinion leaders and each stakeholder will bring forth his input for peace to thrive in the region.

“We are doing so to ensure the investments put up are not destroyed,” said Maina adding that they have also met the political leaders and inked an agreement that would make them remain committed to peace.

She said they now plan to bring on board aspirants vying for various positions for them to commit to bring peace as we move towards elections.
