Gov’t to intensify crackdown on roads as schools reopen

Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport, and Public Works, Kipchumba Murkomen has announced plans to intensify inspections on the roads as schools reopen for the second term on Monday.

Murkomen disclosed that starting Monday, thorough inspections will be conducted to ensure vehicles adhere to safety standards.

Crackdown on roads

“We are prepared to conduct comprehensive inspections to ensure vehicles comply with safety standards,” the CS stated.

He emphasized the need to be vigilant for unroadworthy vehicles that may be pressed into service to accommodate the high number of students travelling next week.

“As our children prepare to return to school on Monday, I want to assure you of our commitment to their safety on the roads. We have implemented mechanisms to ensure thorough inspections of all vehicles to guarantee compliance with road safety standards,” Murkomen assured while in Homabay.

“Throughout the upcoming week, we will continue our vigilant crackdown on road safety, with the Ministry of Interior providing security and traffic police ensuring smooth travel for all. With over one million students expected to travel, we will closely monitor any vehicles that may pose risks due to being unroadworthy, especially those accommodating the influx of students,” he added.

Murkomen also urged parents to release their children early and called on Public Service Vehicles to prioritize safe travel without getting lost.

“I urge parents to release their children early to facilitate easier travelling and monitoring. To all public service vehicle (PSV) drivers, I implore you to prioritize the safety of our children during their travels,” he concluded.

The government, through the Ministry of Education announced that all schools will reopen on Monday, May 13, 2024, for the second term.

This decision comes after President William Ruto postponed schools’ reopening until further notice following floods that ravaged the country.

Schools reopening postponed

In a State of the Nation Address on Friday, May 3, 2024, Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of schools for the second time.

Initially, schools were set to open on April 29, but the date was pushed to May 6 before the President postponed the reopening to a further date.

On Friday, Ruto requested MPs to re-organize their CDF allocations to prioritize the reconstruction of school infrastructure that floods have damaged.
