Governor Mutai says prayers and wife’s vigil helped him through impeachment battle

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has attributed his survival of an impeachment attempt to divine intervention, family support, and the dedication of his legal team.

Speaking after the Senate dismissed the charges against him on Friday, August 29, 2025, the governor expressed profound gratitude to religious leaders who he said had been offering continuous prayers and fasting on his behalf throughout the political crisis that threatened to end his tenure.

“The many pastors who, even as I stand here today, are on their knees praying. They have been fasting on the mountains,” Mutai said.

Mutai particularly acknowledged his wife’s unwavering support during the impeachment proceedings, revealing that she had been holding vigil with other women from Kericho County while he faced the political battle in Nairobi.

“I want to thank my wife so greatly, together with my children. I know they have taken their time to pray even as we speak now. She’s holding vigil with a group of great women from that county,” the governor stated.

Divine intervention

Throughout his remarks, Mutai consistently framed his political survival in spiritual terms, describing the outcome as evidence of divine mercy and second chances.

“But today as we stand here, God has vindicated us, and indeed God is a God of a second chance. I’m not saying that I’m perfect. I’m not saying that I’m good. I have my flaws just like any other human being, but God is a God of second chances,” he reflected.

The governor expressed confidence that divine grace would enable his administration to rebuild and continue moving Kericho County forward, despite having only one financial year remaining before the next election cycle.

“He has given us another opportunity again to go back to Kericho and work for the people of Kericho,” Mutai stated.

Senate proceedings

Friday, August 29, 2025, marked the second time Erick Mutai successfully won against an impeachment attempt

This latest bid to oust him failed after the Senate, by a majority vote, determined that the County Assembly did not meet the required threshold to remove the governor.

In a majority vote, 26 senators confirmed that the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) did not achieve the two-thirds majority needed for impeachment.

Meanwhile, 16 senators voted to affirm that the Kericho County Assembly had the necessary numbers to pass the motion, with one senator abstaining from the vote.

The County Assembly had accused the governor of misconduct, misuse of public resources, unlawful staff dismissals, and authorising questionable payments.
