Governor Mutai reveals 10 students arrested over Litein Boys’ strike
Kericho Governor Eric Mutai has expressed his disappointment over the unrest that broke out at Litein Boys High School on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Monday, September 22, 2025, Mutai, an alumnus of the institution, condemned the incident in which students destroyed property worth millions of shillings. He described the unrest as a monumental disappointment not only to him but also to the people of Kenya.
“As an alumnus of that crazy institution, I condemn the actions that took place at the institution. The events that took place were a huge monumental disappointment not only to me but to the people of Kenya,” he stated.
The governor confirmed that he had already engaged the county commander and security officers, commending them for swift action. Ten students have so far been apprehended, and they are expected to assist investigators in unravelling the cause of the strike.
“I have had an engagement today with the county commander, our security forces. I am very happy, and I commend them for the steps they have taken; they were carrying knives which they broke in the store. 10 boys have been apprehended, and they will lead the security team into the investigation,” he added.

Plans to curb future unrest
Mutai, who also serves as chair of the Education Committee in the Council of Governors, outlined measures he intends to implement to curb student unrest in schools across Kericho and beyond.
He stated that while the incident must be condemned, a long-term solution requires addressing both administrative and systemic challenges in learning institutions.
Mutai revealed plans to convene a meeting with the county education team and regional officials to discuss strategies for dealing with the underlying issues affecting schools, including Litein Boys, with the aim of finding lasting solutions.
“As we condemn this heinous act, it just doesn’t stop. From there, I am organising a meeting with the county education team,” he said.
“I have also reached out to the regional team so that we can come and sit down and look into both administrative and systemic issues of all the institutions we have in Kericho, and both internal and external challenges. By doing so, we will also help to get deep into the root of the problem. Litein is also among them.”
Strike
This comes days after the institution was closed indefinitely following a strike by the boys, during which they destroyed property of unknown value.
