Governor Mutai promises floodlights after 7 die on Kericho–Kisumu highway

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has broken his silence following a deadly accident at Kipsitet along the Kericho–Kisumu highway that has so far claimed seven lives.

While visiting the Kipsitet area on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, to stand in solidarity with residents and inspect the scene of the crash, the governor expressed regret over the tragic loss of lives.

He conveyed condolences to the families and friends of those who died and wished a quick recovery to the injured.

“We regret the unfortunate loss of lives in the Kipsitet bus station accident, which has so far claimed seven lives. We further send out heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones and wish a quick recovery to the injured.” Mutai stated.

Governor Mutai, who was also accompanied by County MP Hon. Beatrice Kemei and other leaders, said they had visited the accident scene to console residents who had gathered following the tragedy.

He added that, to help prevent similar incidents, his administration will install a high-mast floodlight and service existing streetlights to improve visibility.

The governor further noted that, in partnership with the national government, the county will soon begin construction of a multi-million shilling modern Economic Stimulus Programme market. He said the project will provide traders with a safer and more controlled working environment.

The accident

This comes after the Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association of Kenya confirmed the incident through a Facebook post.

According to the association, the accident occurred when a lorry ferrying scrap metal towards Kisumu veered off the road and rammed into people at a bus stage.

“The accident occurred after a lorry ferrying scrap metal towards Kisumu veered off the road, hitting people who were waiting for transport at the bus stage,” the association said in a post.

The association had earlier indicated that six people lost their lives, while four others were left with serious injuries.

“Six people are said to have lost their lives, and four others were seriously injured in a road accident at the Kipsitet area along the Kericho-Kisumu Highway on Tuesday night,” the statement read.
