Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo has asked Kenyans to embrace Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs) to boost food security.
He said it will also help mitigate the effects of climate change.
The Governor said the GMO foods should not be dismissed in totality, adding that anything that is scientifically generated must have its good and side effects.
“We should embrace good use of GMO food but look into ways of minimizing their side effects,” he said.
Otichillo said the National Bio-Safety Authority should provide guidelines to protect consumers from harm.
He also welcomed President William Ruto’s directive on establishment of Climate Change Council saying it is long overdue.
Ottichilo, who is the chairperson on climate change committee of the Council of Governors and an environmentalist by profession, said the council will be key in unlocking funds allocated by the National Assembly towards climate change action plan.
He said the funds had never been utilised by the government due to lack of council as is stipulated under Climate Change Act 2016.
