Homa Bay Governor and ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga led tributes to former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel, hailing him as a steadfast leader and an unwavering defender of his people.

In a heartfelt message posted on her X account on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Wanga confirmed that the ODM fraternity was mourning deeply following the tragic passing of Lempurkel, who succumbed just days after being involved in a devastating accident.

“With hearts heavy with grief, we mourn the tragic loss of our stalwart, Hon. Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime, days after a devastating accident,” Wanga said.

She praised Lempurkel as a dedicated comrade who used his voice in Parliament to stand firmly for his constituents and the marginalised communities of Laikipia North.

“Lempurkel was a dedicated comrade and a true voice for his people. It was an honour to serve alongside him in Parliament,” she wrote.

Wanga extended her condolences not only as a colleague but on behalf of the Orange Democratic Movement, a party in which Lempurkel was a key member.

“On behalf of the ODM fraternity, I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Laikipia North. May you find strength in this dark time,” she said.

Other tributes

Her tribute captures the sense of loss felt across political circles, especially among leaders who served alongside Lempurkel during his time in the National Assembly. Known for his outspoken nature and grassroots connection, Lempurkel was often described as a leader who never shied away from raising issues that touched on justice, equality, and the rights of his people.

The late MP represented Laikipia North between 2013 and 2017, earning recognition for championing pastoralist issues and advocating for peace and security in conflict-prone areas. His death now leaves a void not only in his community but also in the broader national conversation about leadership rooted in service.

In her message, Wanga emphasised that his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched through his leadership. Her words, “Rest in peace,” underlined the sombre mood within ODM and among Kenyans who followed his political journey.

As tributes continue to pour in, the nation reflects on the legacy of Mathew Lempurkel, remembered not just as a politician but as a true son of Laikipia North whose voice carried the aspirations of his people.
