Gideon Moi kicks off Baringo senate bid with Ksh2.5M gift to teachers
By Mabonga Makhanu, October 5, 2025KANU chairman Gideon Moi has officially kick-started his campaign for the Baringo Senate seat with a donation of Ksh 2.5 million to teachers in the county.
The contribution was delivered on Saturday, October 4, 2025, during a teachers’ meeting in Baringo County, where former Baringo Woman Representative Gladwell Cheruiyot represented Moi and handed over the funds on his behalf.

Cheruiyot, while addressing the gathering, said she had been sent by the KANU leader to deliver the donation, hinting that more support could follow as the campaign season intensifies.
Gideon Moi, who has long maintained a low profile, has now made his first major political move since announcing his bid for the Baringo senatorial by-election slated for November 27.
“Nimetumwa, simnajua hio jina ikitajwa kuna kitu inafuatwa, sijakuja hivi hivi nimetumwa, nimekuja na kitu si mbaya itawatosha nyinyi wote ni mita mbili na nusu,” Gladwell Cheruiyot stated.
The party confirmed Moi’s candidature in a statement issued on Thursday, October 2, 2025, by Director of Communications Manasse Nyainda, following what it described as extensive consultations with members and the people of Baringo.
“The Kenya African National Union (KANU) wishes to formally announce that, following extensive consultations, deliberations, and consensus within the party and with the people of Baringo, our National Chairman, Hon. Gideon Moi, has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election,” read the press release in part.
Gideon Moi is now set to face United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party candidate Vincent Kiprono Chemitei, who won the UDA primaries.
Kamket’s reaction
His return has ignited a lot of reactions from leaders aligned to the UDA party. Shortly after announcing his comeback to Baringo politics, Tiaty MP William Kamket, who was once an ally of Gideon Moi, defected to the government’s side after the 2022 general election.

He declared that it is the only UDA candidate that will be voted for and not other parties.
“Hii ni message kwa sababu naona kuna kiti inang’ang’aniwa; wale wanataka kiti ya senator message kutoka Tiaty, kiti ya senator ya Baringo itaenda na chama cha UDA. Yule mtu tunapea yeye kiti cha UDA ni yule ako UDA; kama hauko ndani ya UDA, potea,” Kamket stated.
