The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by interim Deputy Party leader Cleophas Malala, has officially unveiled its first batch of aspirants for the upcoming by-elections, signalling its intent to challenge the ruling party and other dominant political forces across Kenya.

While speaking on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Malala said that the party’s by-elections will be democratic.

“On behalf of the party leader, I am glad to unveil the following candidates in the following jurisdictions. All party members will participate in the bi-elections,” he said.

“We are going to have free and fair elections; only party members will participate in the nominations. We will ensure all our members are registered so that they can nominate aspirants. We also urge the IEBC to live up to its promises. To date, IEBC has not given us the by-election date; please do so as promised,” Malala added.

Edgar Busiega – Nominated to vie for the Malava parliamentary seat in Kakamega County.

Aden Mohammed – Nominated to contest the Banisa Constituency in Mandera County.

By-elections

The by-elections involve 22 electoral positions, including six National Assembly seats, one senatorial position, and 15 Member of County Assembly (MCA) vacancies. Malala also said that in areas where DCP has more than one candidate, the party shall conduct free and fair by-elections. This move is part of Gachagua’s broader strategy to reposition himself and his party as a significant player in Kenyan politics following his impeachment in October 2024.

The party’s approach, encapsulated by the slogan “Skiza Wakenya” (Listen to Kenyans), emphasises inclusive and community-driven governance. This was reiterated during a high-level meeting where leaders stressed the importance of grounding national strategy in local realities.

After his impeachment, Gachagua launched the DCP on May 15, 2025, aiming to provide an alternative to the current political establishment. His party’s focus on grassroots mobilisation and people-centred representation is intended to resonate with voters disillusioned by traditional

The by-elections will test Gachagua’s ability to translate his personal popularity and the DCP’s message into electoral success, potentially setting the stage for his political comeback. This development marks a pivotal moment for Gachagua and the DCP, as they seek to establish a foothold in Kenyan politics amidst a competitive and fragmented electoral landscape.
