Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has condemned United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the expulsion of Gloria Orwoba from the ruling party.

Orwoba, who had been nominated to the senate by UDA, found herself in murky waters after she joined Fred Matiang’i’s political activities in Kisii and Nyamira.

Her actions were deemed as a show of disloyalty to UDA, leading to her expulsion and subsequently her seat in the senate being declared vacant.

The new outfit in the political arena, DCP, has now criticised the move by UDA.

“The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is the true embodiment of democratic values in Kenya. While parties like UDA claim to stand for democracy, their actions prove otherwise. DCP doesn’t just carry the word democracy in its name—we live it, we practice it, and we protect it.

“The recent expulsion of Senator Gloria Orwoba by UDA is a clear sign of growing political intolerance. What were her so-called crimes? First, she attended a cultural event in her home county, Kisii, where leaders from across the political divide—including ODM’s Simba Arati—gathered to welcome Hon. Fred Matiang’i. This was a show of unity, not division,” DCP said in a statement on X posted on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Defending Orwoba, DCP said that Senate Speaker Amason Kingi rushed in, declaring the seat vacant.

“Second, she had the courage to question CS Alfred Mutua on behalf of Kenyans who lost their money under the promise of jobs abroad. Her boldness unsettled the Cabinet Secretary—but that is exactly what leadership looks like: standing for truth and demanding answers.

“The Senate Speaker’s rush to declare her seat vacant, even while a court order was in place, is a dangerous signal of the shrinking democratic space under President Ruto’s leadership,” it added.

Gachagua’s party has vowed to defend Orwoba.

“Senator Gloria Orwoba has been a fearless voice for girls’ rights, justice, and human dignity. She is not alone—DCP stands with her. We will continue to defend every Kenyan’s right to speak, question, and participate without fear.

“DCP is not just a name. We are democracy, for the citizens, by the citizens,” it concluded.
