Gachagua to Uhuru: ‘I will defend you, your family and properties’
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to defend retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, his family and properties, saying he will seek peace and consult him at Ichaweri when necessary.
The former Mathira Member of Parliament also said he will ensure Uhuru’s retirement remains peaceful despite past political differences.
Speaking in an interview with Kameme TV on Monday, April 20, 2026, Gachagua said that the former president Uhuru Kenyatta should be allowed to retire in peace.
“There was a time when Uhuru Kenyatta was not feeling well. I must find peace for that man. There was a time we had differences, and that cannot prevent us from having discussions now,” Gachagua said.

“I wish you a peaceful retirement, and I will protect you, your family and your properties. In case you see me go in the wrong direction, correct me, and in any case I need to consult, I will come to Ichaweri to consult…let Uhuru Kenyatta retire in peace,” he added.
Gachagua to seek advice from Uhuru
Gachagua also, in his comments, urged the former president to hold him accountable, and according to him, should he ever go astray, he expects Uhuru Kenyatta to rebuke him. He also stated that he would never be reluctant to go and seek advice in the rural home of Uhuru (Ichaweri) whenever he needs to seek advice or consultation. This is an act, he proposed, as an expression of humility and deference to experience in leadership.

Gachagua further even referred to Uhuru as an elder brother, other than a former president, showing a personal connection in spite of politics. He included that whatever they discuss must not be made public, but they should be very confidential in all their interactions.
“He is my elder brother, and whenever we have talks, we must not announce our deliberations,” Gachagua said.
Cementing collaboration ahead of 2027 elections
The remarks of the former deputy president are in an era of political activity and changing alliances in the Kenyan political scene. His conciliatory approach to Uhuru Kenyatta is an indication of a stronger relationship between the two leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections and cements their decision to work together in the opposition.
