Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that at some point he had to record President William Ruto urging him to resign before his impeachment.

Speaking to a local TV station on Monday, April 7, 2025, Gachagua claimed that the president sent an emissary to him to convince him t resign as the second in command or get impeached.

According to the former DP, Ruto sent a senior government official to his residence with a promise of an unofficial retirement perk amounting to billions of shillings.

He says when he failed to heed to the call, another meeting was organised between him, the president and the senior government official, in which he recorded everything.

“That Friday when my case was at the Senate, the Ppresident sent an officer to me. He told the officer I should have a conversation with him,” Gachagua said.

“We met somewhere along Statehouse Road.  We had a conversation with the President, where I was given that offer again and I declined. That officer urged me to listen to the President, but I said no.”

Gachagua has also denied claims that he asked Ruto for Ksh10 billion to resign as the second in command.

“Of course I did not blackmail the president for Ksh10 billion. This impeachment was crafted by William Ruto, drafted by the NIS, and Professor Kithure Kindiki. Since October 18th, the president has never spoken about it—until he came to the Mountain. He better make up his mind about why he hounded me out of office,” Gachagua said.

“When he went to Western Kenya, he said I was incompetent and tribal. Then in Eastern Kenya, he claimed he got rid of me because I am divisive and don’t support national unity. When he went to Nyanza, he said I am primitive and corrupt. Ruto gave women Ksh8,000 each—that’s Ksh8 million in total. Ruto picked me because I’m a good mobiliser.”
