Gachagua reveals why he cancelled Kamukunji rally during his return from the US
By Arnold Ngure, August 27, 2025Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has revealed why he cancelled a planned rally at the Kamukunji Grounds on August 21, 2025, shortly after landing from the United States.
Gachagua had planned to address the public at the Kamukunji Grounds, but was met with violent goons on his way to the venue, forcing him to cancel the public address.
Gachagua disclosed that the state had orchestrated a plot to have him killed as he made his way to the grounds, and that he made the decision to abort the rally out of fears that innocent members of the public could have lost their lives.
Goon attacks
“The government attacked me using policemen in civilian clothes, accompanied by goons. They wanted to kill me at Pipeline. They took a big boulder and dropped it on my car, and I escaped death by a whisker,” Gachagua said.

He equally stated that his attempts to use the Expressway were thwarted by police officers, who exposed him to attacks by goons, who had been planted to stone his convoy.
“I wanted to pass through the Expressway, but the police blocked me so that I could go to where the trap had been set,” Gachagua said.
Cancelled the rally
“So, when I analysed the situation, I cancelled the journey to Kamukunji because I don’t want people to die in my name. The violence that we are seeing against DCP is being carried out by the state.”

Speaking about why opposition leaders did not come to receive him at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Gachagua said that they were not to come.
“They were not supposed to come. I was just coming home, and I think that when Kipchumba Murkomen felt that he wanted to arrest me, my supporters decided to come to the airport to make sure that I am safe,” he stated.
The former DP had just returned from a six-week tour of the United States when his convoy was met by stone-throwing youths at Airport North Road and City Cabanas, forcing police to intervene with tear gas to control the crowds. Several people were injured in the melee, including journalists whose vehicles and equipment were damaged.
