Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has applauded a young Kenyan girl, Truphena Muthoni, for her bold attempt to set a Guinness World Record by hugging a tree for 72 hours — a challenge he says should awaken the world to the urgency of environmental protection and mental health awareness.

In a message shared on Facebook on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Gachagua said Muthoni’s unusual but symbolic effort reflects a new generation willing to think differently about conservation and personal well-being.

“Truphena Muthoni, push on, my daughter,” he wrote

Gachagua described her environmental activism as inspiring, noting that breaking the world record is only part of the bigger picture.

“I strongly encourage you in your conservation resolve to not only break your record in the Guinness World Records of hugging a tree but also the awareness creation on environmental conservation and the mental health challenges attached.”

He said Muthoni’s attempt sends a powerful message at a time when climate concerns continue to grow, and mental health conversations are becoming increasingly important among young people.

“As a father and a leader, I am truly proud of you and wish you success,” he added.

Gachagua also said the challenge should spark global reflection on how people relate to nature and to one another, calling it a reminder that humanity must slow down and protect the environment.

“Your 72-hour challenge is a great reminder that the world needs to take time and take care of our common home. Your futuristic thoughts must prick the mind of the world to reset thoughts on conservation and mental health challenges,” he wrote

He closed his message with an assurance of continued support, signalling how strongly he feels about the young girl’s mission.

“I am with you every step of the way,” he wrote

As the 72-hour countdown progresses, her story is quickly becoming a national talking point, blending environmental action, resilience and youthful courage.
