Gachagua hails election of Kanjama as LSK President

By , February 20, 2026

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hailed the election of Charles Kanjama as the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and his election has been hailed as a milestone for the legal profession in Kenya, where constitutional governance is increasingly becoming a challenge.

In a post on social media on Friday, February 20, 2026, Gachagua congratulated not only Kanjama but also the Council that came along with him, who, according to him, will play a vital role in leading the society throughout the next term.

Gachagua pointed at the history of fidelity to the Constitution and undying respect for the rule of law as the character traits that made Kanjama likely to be persuaded that he is the right person to lead the LSK through the current challenging times, in which there are fears of government overreach and cases of constitutional violations.

“Congratulations SC. @ckanjamaon, your election as the President of the Law Society of Kenya. My hearty congratulations too, to your Council elected with you to help steer the society. Your friends know that you are the best man for the job at a time like this, where the government is violating the constitution with sheer impunity, and the rule of Law replaced with goonism,” Gachagua’s statement read in part.

As Gachagua points out, the election of Kanjama is a message that the legal fraternity in Kenya has confidence in him to exercise professional integrity and lead the society in protecting the interests of the population.

The former deputy president was optimistic that with Kanjama at the helm, the LSK would assume a strong position in protecting the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and make the rule of law a primary agenda in the running of the nation.

He also encouraged the society to be central in ensuring that national assets are not arbitrarily sold in the society without involving the population and combating the misuse of public funds, especially where they are claimed to be utilised to acquire political favours.

Gachagua also underscored the role of the LSK in the involvement with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and that society plays a very significant role in achieving a free, fair, credible, and verifiable 2027 General Election.

He characterised the leadership of Kanjama as opportune and needed, especially as Kenyans seek the services of such institutions as the LSK to instil some democratic values into the country, giving some checks to the good governance issues and protecting the civil liberties.

Gachagua reiterated the greater ambitions of the Kenyan people by congratulating Kanjama and his team, that the LSK, with its new leadership, should establish itself as a watchdog to constitutional governance, accountability to the people and professional integrity.

He determined that the voice of the society has to be strong, independent, and fearless in holding the public and the private players accountable, and it was in this regard that the LSK will assume a decisive role in securing the rule of the law and national interests, which is a critical juncture in the country.
