Gachagua demands safer roads after fatal Nyeri crash
By Mustafa Juma, March 28, 2026Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for urgent action to improve road safety following a tragic accident in Nyeri County that claimed multiple lives and left several others injured.
The fatal crash occurred near Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology, involving a matatu and a lorry, in an incident that has once again highlighted growing concerns over road safety in Kenya.
Taking to his official X account on the night of Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader described the incident as a national tragedy, expressing deep sorrow for the families affected.
“It is a difficult moment for our nation and the several families tonight following the tragic road crash in Nyeri county near Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology involving a Matatu and a Lorry,” Gachagua stated.

He extended condolences to those who lost loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.
“My family and I send our deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish quick recovery to the injured ones,” he added.
Gachagua cautions road users
Gachagua further urged motorists and all road users to exercise maximum caution, emphasising the need for personal responsibility in preventing accidents.
“I call for maximum care and caution on our roads to save human lives at every point of our journeys on our roads,” he stated.
Call for action
He went ahead to challenge authorities responsible for road infrastructure and safety to take immediate action.
He stressed that proper road signage, maintenance, and safety measures should not be treated as optional but as a fundamental right for all Kenyans.
“At the same time, authorities charged with responsibility for the betterment of our roads and signages must ensure such isn’t a privilege but a right for every road user. One life lost, is one too many. May the Almighty God rest the Souls of our Faithful departed in eternal peace,” Gachagua wrote on X.
