As President William Ruto moves to purge allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua both in the Executive and Parliament, politicians have intensified lobbying for various positions likely to fall vacant.

At the same time, at least 300 employees hired on contract during Gachagua’s reign at Harambee House Annex have started receiving dismissal letters.

Those who have already received the letters told the People Daily that they were informed that their contracts had been terminated as their services were no longer required.

In October, 108 officers serving in Gachagua’s office were served with letters signed by Principal Administrative Secretary Patrick Mwangi sending them on compulsory leave.

In the National Assembly, lobbying for the coveted chairmanship of the Budget and Appropriations Committee has intensified following reports that Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who currently holds it, is set to be replaced after allegedly “playing it safe” during Gachagua’s impeachment.

Sources say that President Ruto is did not take kindly Nyoro’s decision to stay on the fence during the impeachment of his former principal assistant, a process that was largely spearheaded by Majority Leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah.

Nyoro’s fallout with the system has opened the door for fresh leadership in one of the National Assembly’s most influential committees, which is pivotal in shaping the financial direction of the government.

As such, opinion is now divided over whether the chairmanship of the Budget and Appropriations Committee should go to Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse or Molo MP Kuria Kimani, who currently chairs the Finance Committee.

Sources say that the anticipated elevation of Mutuse could come as a well-deserved reward for the first-term MP, who filed and moved the impeachment motion against Gachagua.

Through Mutuse’s efforts, Gachagua became the first sitting Deputy President to be impeached in Kenya’s history. But some of the President’s allies are pushing for the position to be given to Kuria Kimani, to appease the restless Mt Kenya region after Gachagua’s exit.
