Gachagua claims security chiefs orchestrated deadly goon attacks at Sifuna, Orengo-led Kakamega rally
By Kenneth Mwenda, February 21, 2026Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned government officials, saying they organised violence at a political rally in Kakamega on February 21, 2026.
He accused the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and his Principal Secretary of mobilising goons to attack attendees under police protection.
According to Gachagua, one goon died in the clash, and others suffered serious injuries. He described the situation as very sad and highlighted Kenya’s reputation as an island of peace in Africa since independence.
He claimed that security leaders now cause the insecurity they should prevent.
“They are in charge of mobilising goons and giving the goons police escort to unleash violence on innocent citizens,” Gachagua wrote.
The incident occurred during the Linda Mwananchi rally at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega town. Organisers, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, aimed to mobilise grassroots support against the government.
The rally followed a series of similar events, but tensions escalated when the convoy faced attacks en route. On February 20, assailants stoned a sound truck linked to Sifuna in Kisumu’s Riat area as it headed to Kakamega. Sifuna shared footage on social media, showing stones shattering the windscreen.
“Ishabatizwa….Our crew reporting that state sponsored goons struck just after Riat in Kisumu…lakini safari itaendelea,” he posted.
No one suffered injuries in that attack.

Deadly clashes rock Kakamega
In Kakamega, clashes intensified on February 21. Witnesses reported goons arriving to disrupt the event.
Attendees dispersed the group, capturing and overpowering several intruders.
“One of the goons was not lucky. The knife he had carried to go and harm others when accosted left him lifeless,” Gachagua stated.
“He left his home for a few coins and will go back in a casket while others were seriously injured.”
Others sustained serious injuries. Gachagua urged officials to create jobs for youth instead of enticing them with handouts that lead to premature deaths and injuries.
He linked the violence to broader government failures. Gachagua accused rogue officials of organising goons and rogue police to attack churches and protecting them from prosecution. He referenced Murkomen, whom he called “Celebrity CS”.
“The ‘civilians’ our celebrity CS Murkomen said are having teargas canisters lobbed tear gas on the meeting but people were unmoved!” Gachagua wrote.
Gachagua encouraged Kenyans to show courage.
“Courage, Kenyans!” he urged.
He warned Murkomen directly: “Kipchumba don’t push Kenyans beyond. Kenyans will say No! The World is watching. Your route to ICC is clearer than ever before.”
