Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has blasted Wajir County Governor Ahmed Abdulahi over what he terms as acceptance that there are developmental gaps between the northern counties and the rest of the counties.

Taking it to his social media handles on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Gachagua has accused the county of embezzlement of close to Ksh 200 billion allocated since the year 2013. Gachagua has said that despite the allocation of these huge amounts of funds, the county is still characterised by poor infrastructure, ungoverned spaces, and a lack of electricity.

He has said that it becomes hard to understand how the Wajir Governor Abdullahi, who is serving his second term as Wajir governor, could accept the fact that there are developmental gaps in the region.

“Yet, in the governor’s own words, the county remains unattractive, characterised by poor infrastructure, ungoverned spaces, and a lack of electricity. It is hard to understand how a sitting two-term governor and the current chairman of the Council of Governors can describe his own county this way after presiding over the spending of almost Ksh 200 billion that was meant to fix exactly these basic challenges,” Gachagua stated.

Gachagua has further pointed out that people of Wajir County are really being coerced to believe that the county could not spare a penny out of the allocated amount to solve the recurring and perennial water shortages.

He has noted that it is painful to see families in the county face daily life with no water, no decent sanitation, no electricity, no functional healthcare facilities and no reliable infrastructure. These are not luxuries. They are the bare minimum required for human life, human dignity and life’s existence.

The former deputy president has called on the county boss to fix the water problem, work on the sanitation system and have functional healthcare facilities for your people. Gachagua has said that it is a sad state for the people of Wajir County, who have stayed for over 60 years and 13 years of devolution without proper development.

Gachagua’s stand-off with NE leaders

Recently, the DCP party leader has been seen pointing fingers at the leadership of the northern region over the mismanagement of funds allocated to the region. He has cited corrupt leadership as the main reason for lagging in terms of development compared to the other regions.

In his response to the former deputy president’s remarks on the development of Wajir County, the county boss, Ahmed Abdullahi, who is also the chairperson of the council of governors, accepted the fact that there are developmental gaps in the northern region but was quick to disassociate the gaps from corrupt leaders.

Ahmed has pointed out the vast state of the region in terms of landmass and the historical state of the region being left behind in development. The governor has defended the county as having done better than any other average county in the country, owing to these facts.

Governor Ahmed has cited that the attacks from the former Deputy President on Northern Kenya leaders emanate from their decision to support the government.
