Fresh twist in death of former Matungu MP’s son after autopsy findings
By Viola Kosome, May 26, 2026Former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were has questioned the circumstances surrounding the death of his son, Hunington Were, after a post-mortem showed he died from serious stab wounds.
Speaking outside the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary after the autopsy on May 26, 2026, the former MP said the findings were different from the information the family had first received.
According to Were, they had initially been told that Hunington had been hit on the back of the head with a blunt object by a bodaboda rider before collapsing.
However, the post-mortem report showed there was no head injury. Doctors found that Hunington had three major stab wounds, which caused severe internal bleeding.
“One stab wound pierced the lungs while another injured the kidneys. The doctor told us the injuries caused heavy bleeding and led to his death,” Were stated.
Intention to kill
He said the pathologist informed the family that the attack appeared to have been carried out with the intention to kill.
“The injuries were very serious. The doctor even said that even if he had been rushed to hospital earlier, chances of survival were very low,” he added.
The former lawmaker said the findings had raised more questions about what really happened to his son.
“We were told he had been hit on the head, but the doctors say there was no injury there. The stab wounds are what killed him,” he said.
Were also questioned the delay in taking his son to hospital, saying Hunington was injured around midnight but arrived at hospital at about 3 am.

DCI probes murder case
He said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were continuing with investigations and had already recorded statements from several people.
“The DCI is handling the matter and comparing the statements with the post-mortem report so that the truth can come out,” he said.
Were also revealed that another one of his sons was murdered in Nairobi earlier in 2026, and investigations into that case are still ongoing.
“My other son was killed in Nairobi in January and we are still waiting for answers. We are asking investigators to move quickly so we can get justice,” he said.
Wife also raises suspicion
Hunington’s wife, Faniet Magalu also expressed suspicion over the actions of the man who was reportedly with her husband before his death.
She claimed the man came to her house after the incident, removed his blood-stained shirt and changed into Hunington’s T-shirt before informing her that her husband was in hospital.
“I became suspicious because his story kept changing. The report now shows there was no head injury as he had claimed,” she said.
The family said funeral preparations had already started and Hunington will be buried next Saturday, June 6, 2026.
