Former Vice President Moody Awori on Monday, August 11, 2025, broke his absence from the limelight with insightful lessons on parenting and community service.

Speaking during an event to commission the classroom and water project at the Moody Awori Primary School in Funyula, Busia County, Kenya’s ninth VP challenged parents to play a collaborative role with their children’s teachers.

Awori maintained that it is imperative for the custodians to keep track of their children’s development in school and well-being.

Education

“Education is important. It is a cooperation between the parents who look to the children to do better than themselves. The parent must motivate their children; they also have to work with their teachers. I saw in the papers that out of the 12 months, parents only have the children for three months. It is important you have good relations with the teachers,” he stated.

“Children belong to the community. When a child in your village is misbehaving, you do not have to wait for their parent. You are a surrogate parent, and you have to prepare and straighten out the child,” he enthused.

During the function, Awori similarly challenged individuals to be proactive and seek opportunities to impact their environment andt make change to their immediate society.

Awori, who retired to his Funyula home after his tenure as VP on January 9, 2008, now engages in altruistic programs as a way to give back to the community.

He was accompanied to the function by members of his family from Canada and America.

Make an impact

“You don’t have to wait for your MPs, governor, MCA, or whatever leader to give back to society. You can give a service to the community, so thank God for giving you the capacity to improve and lift other people’s lives,” he advised.

During the function, Awori also revealed the helping hand of the former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who aided his altruistic initiatives with a financial boost of Ksh10 million for the building of 16 classrooms in the area.

The function was attended by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Busia Governor Dr. Paul Nyongesa Otuoma, MPs Raphael Wanjala (Budalang’i) and Wilberforce Oundo (Funyula).

Also present were Principal Secretary for Economic Planning, Boniface Makokha and NG-CDF Board Chair Olago Aluoch, alongside other local and national leaders
