Former Shinyalu MP Daniel Khamasi dies at 79

The news of his death was announced by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. Further details surrounding the cause of the former legislator’s demise were not disclosed.
Khamasi dies
”I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hon. Daniel Khamasi, former MP for Shinyalu,” Barasa took to X.
In his message of condolence, Governor Barasa described the late politician as a committed leader who devoted his life to public service and the advancement of Shinyalu.
The governor extended sympathies to Khamasi’s family, friends, and residents of Shinyalu, conveying the county’s collective sorrow and wishing the former MP eternal rest.
”He was a dedicated servant whose contribution to Shinyalu will be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Shinyalu,’ Barasa added.
Khamasi served as Shinyalu’s Member of Parliament for a decade, beginning his parliamentary journey in 1997 after winning the seat on a FORD–Kenya ticket. He successfully defended his position in the 2002 General Election under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC).
His tenure came to an end in 2007 when he lost the seat to Charles Lugano Lilechi of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
During his time in the National Assembly, Khamasi also occasionally took on the role of deputy speaker, reflecting the trust placed in him by fellow legislators.
Western Kenya loses
Khamasi’s demise comes on the burial day of the former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, who perished in a controversial road accident earlier in December 2025, adding more grief to the larger Luhya community.
His death also follows the passing away of former Likuyani Member of Parliament Enoch Wamalwa Kibunguchy, a seasoned politician and public servant whose career spanned two constituencies and several electoral cycles. The former legislator passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, while undergoing treatment in an Eldoret hospital after a prolonged illness.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has also mourned the death of Daniel Khamasi: ”My condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of former Shinyalu MP Daniel Khamasi following his passing at the age of 79. May his legacy of service to the people of Shinyalu be remembered, and may his soul rest in peace.” Passaris took to X.
