At least 160 people have died due to ongoing floods in the country, with the latest six fatalities reported in four counties.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said three people died in Taita Taveta and one each in Narok, Kilifi and Homa Bay counties in recent incidents.

Mwaura urged Kenyans to be vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, stay informed about weather alerts and report emergencies to the National Disaster Operations centre.

“Six fatalities have been reported in the last 24 hours,” Mwaura said in a statement yesterday.

He also said floods had affected school infrastructure in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Embu, Garissa, Homa Bay, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kisii Meru, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Samburu, Murang’a, Taita Taveta, Tana River and West Pokot counties.

On Monday, the Ministry of Education said it was conducting a rapid assessment exercise on the effects of El Nino rains on learning institutions.

Director General Elyas Abdi said a rapid assessment reporting template for County Directors of Education and head teachers had been established to guide the process.

He said the assessment will inform interventions that will assist in the smooth re-opening of schools in January.

Mwaura said that weather forecasts indicate continued rainfall this week in the Central highlands, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria basin, South Eastern lowlands and the Coast.

Dry conditions are expected in North Eastern and North Western Kenya except Garissa where occasional rainfall is anticipated.

“We are concerned and planning effectively as the heavy rainfall in specific areas threatens to exacerbate the ongoing floods,” said the spokesperson.
