The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that the Marigat–Loruk (B17) Road remains closed due to severe flooding caused by rising water levels from Lake Baringo.

In a public notice issued by the authority on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, KeNHA said the affected section of the road stretches between kilometre 29+800 and kilometre 40+000. The closure, effective from 21st August 2025, has disrupted travel and transport in the region, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

“KeNHA wishes to inform the public that Marigat–Loruk (B17) Road remains closed due to flooding of the road from rising water levels from Lake Baringo,” the notice stated.

The authority has put in place a diversion for affected motorists. The alternative route has been graded at kilometre 29+200 on the Marigat–Loruk Road and connects to the Loruk–Chemalingot Road at kilometre 2+400. Motorists are advised to use the diversion to avoid accidents or being stranded.

KeNHA also cautioned road users against attempting to traverse the flooded section, noting that safety remains the top priority. “The Authority cautions road users against any attempts to use this section of the road in the interest of their safety,” the notice emphasised.

Officials said they will continue monitoring the water levels and provide updates when the road is safe to reopen. The authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring seamless connectivity for the safe passage of goods and services to support economic activities in the region.

Luka Kimeli, the Director General of KeNHA, assured the public that the authority is closely monitoring the situation and will act promptly once conditions improve.

Residents and transport operators are urged to plan their travel accordingly and make use of alternative routes to avoid unnecessary delays. KeNHA has also provided a toll-free line and email contacts for enquiries and updates on road conditions.
