The death toll from devastating floods across Kenya has risen to 71, as the National Police Service (NPS) intensifies search and rescue operations in affected regions following days of heavy rainfall.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that five more fatalities had been recorded, pushing the cumulative number of deaths to 71.

According to the police, Nairobi remains the hardest-hit area, accounting for 36 deaths. The Eastern region has recorded 19 fatalities, while the Rift Valley has reported eight. Nyanza has four deaths, the Coast region three, and the Central region one.

“The National Police Service (NPS), in collaboration with all relevant partners, has continued to undertake arduous search and rescue operations across the country. These efforts come in response to the sudden flash floods caused by heavy downpours that have wreaked havoc in various regions,” the statement reads in part.

“Unfortunately, the cumulative number of fatalities has now risen to 71, with five more deaths recorded. Nairobi remains the hardest-hit region, with 36 victims. The Eastern region has recorded one additional fatality, bringing its tally to 19, while the Coast region has reported one more, increasing its total to three. Families displaced

The ongoing downpours have triggered flash floods that have swept through homes and settlements, leaving a trail of destruction. Authorities estimate that at least 2,622 families have been displaced, with many more affected by the loss of property and critical infrastructure.

The National Police Service said it is working closely with other emergency response agencies and partners to carry out rescue missions, often under difficult conditions, as teams race against time to locate missing persons and assist stranded residents.

With rainfall expected to continue, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other government agencies.

Kenyans warned

Authorities have warned residents in flood-prone areas to avoid crossing swollen rivers, moving through flooded roads, or staying in unstable structures.

“Furthermore, the floods have swept through several areas with force, destroying homes, displacing approximately 2,622 families, and causing widespread destruction of infrastructure and property,” NPS stated.

“With rains projected to continue across the country, we urge members of the public to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, and to strictly adhere to updates and safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other relevant government agencies.”

The NPS also commended first responders, volunteers, and partner organizations for their ongoing efforts in saving lives and supporting affected communities. A high-level emergency response team remains on standby and actively deployed across the country to respond to distress calls.

Members of the public have been encouraged to report emergencies through toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112, or via the “Fichua kwa DCI” platform.
