Kenya Airways has announced that flight KQ203 will be temporarily renamed RAO001 as it enters Kenyan airspace to honour the late political leader Raila Odinga.

“KQ203 will change to RAO001 as soon as we reach the Kenya Airspace at around 8:50 am to honour and respect our departed leader,” the airline said in a statement posted on their official X account on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

The flight, which is en route from abroad, is expected to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 09:30 am.

This symbolic gesture by Kenya Airways comes as the nation prepares to pay its last respects to Odinga, who had a profound impact on Kenya’s political landscape. The temporary flight code change is a rare tribute in the airline industry, reflecting the high esteem in which the late leader is held.

Kenya Airways stated that the change is meant to show respect and solidarity with the mourning nation. The airline’s announcement has already drawn attention on social media, with Kenyans expressing appreciation for the gesture.

The renaming of the flight serves as both a tribute and a reminder of Odinga’s contributions to the country. By temporarily changing the flight number, Kenya Airways joins the broader national mourning, highlighting the airline’s role in connecting communities during significant moments in the nation’s history.

Passengers on board KQ203 are expected to witness the moment the flight enters Kenyan airspace and assumes the RAO001 designation, marking a unique occasion in the airline’s operations.

The symbolic renaming underscores the nation’s collective respect for leaders who have shaped Kenya’s democracy, as citizens across the country prepare to honour Raila Odinga’s legacy in the coming days.
