Fireworks, flyovers and a really long Trump speech ahead as US celebrates 250 years of independence
By BBC, July 4, 2026US President Donald Trump will head to Washington DC’s National Mall on Saturday for what he has billed as a “spectacular rally” celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
The event, taking place as a sweltering heatwave grips swathes of the eastern and central US, will include flyovers by hundreds of aircraft and a fireworks display organisers hope will be the biggest of all time.
Military flyovers over Washington, DC, will happen every hour between 13:15 local time (17:15 GMT) and sunset, organisers said, with Trump’s new Air Force One expected to feature in one of the aerial formations over the capital.
Extremely hot, humid temperatures of approximately 38°C (100°F), coupled with a later-than-anticipated start time, may affect turnout at the event.
Forecasters have also warned of possible evening thunderstorms that could disrupt the celebrations, which have been organised by a White House-backed public-private partnership.

Several events that had been scheduled earlier on Saturday were cancelled because of the extreme heat.
Trump to deliver major Independence Day address
President Trump used a speech on the eve of Independence Day to argue that American identity is under threat from what he described as domestic “radicals” and “extremists.”
Speaking at Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota on Friday, he warned of what he called a resurgence of the “communist menace” and criticised “newcomers” who, he said, embraced ideas opposed to the American way of life.
His remarks reflect a growing Republican campaign message ahead of the November midterm elections, with the party seeking to portray Democrats as embracing socialist or communist ideologies.
The Washington event, officially titled the Salute to America 250 Celebrations & Fireworks, is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time, with Trump expected to address the nation at around 9:45 p.m.
The president has promised to deliver a “really long speech” despite the intense heat, saying it would demonstrate that he “can do anything”.
Record-breaking fireworks planned
The annual Fourth of July fireworks display is expected to be the centrepiece of the celebrations.
Trump has promised this year’s spectacle will be the “largest fireworks show in history”.
According to organisers, approximately 850,000 fireworks will be launched from 10 locations across Washington, including eight barges on the Potomac River. The display is expected to last around 40 minutes, twice the length of the traditional show, which typically features about 20,000 fireworks.
Organisers hope the display will earn a Guinness World Record by surpassing the current record set in the Philippines in 2016.
Environmental and safety concerns raised
Despite the ambitious plans, environmental experts have raised concerns about the potential impact of the fireworks.
Internal National Park Service documents obtained by media outlets, including The Washington Post and Politico reportedly warned that the display could create “very unhealthy” air quality conditions in central Washington.
Authorities also expect airport-style security checks, while soaring temperatures and the possibility of storms could further complicate crowd management.
Political controversy surrounds the event
The anniversary celebrations have also sparked political debate.
Critics have accused Freedom250, the White House-backed organisation coordinating the event, of sidelining the bipartisan America250 Commission established by Congress to oversee the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations.
Some Democrats argue Trump has sought to turn a national celebration into a political event.

“President Trump couldn’t help but try making America’s 250th birthday all about himself,” California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla said during a Senate hearing on June 24.
Freedom250 has rejected those claims, dismissing them as a “partisan smear” by politicians more interested in scoring political points than in celebrating the country’s historic milestone.
Celebrations across the United States
Elsewhere across the country, cities are marking Independence Day with their own commemorative events.
In New York City, the iconic Times Square Ball will descend eight times to mark midnight across each US time zone, while a major fireworks display is scheduled for 9:25 p.m.
Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago at Independence Hall, will host a star-studded concert featuring performers including Christina Aguilera and Meek Mill. The city will also stage its final FIFA World Cup match earlier in the day as part of the broader Independence Day festivities.
