According to a statement shared by the National Police Service (NPS) on their social media handles on Monday, April 20, 2026, the ongoing intelligence-led disarmament operation in Turkana County is recording steady progress as security agencies step up efforts to restore stability and enhance public safety.
In the latest development, a resident voluntarily surrendered an illegal AK-47 rifle together with an empty magazine, adding to the number of weapons already recovered through the exercise.
“The ongoing intelligence-led, peaceful disarmament exercise in Turkana County continues to yield positive results as security agencies intensify efforts to enhance public safety and stability in the region. In the latest development, a member of the public voluntarily surrendered one illegal AK-47 rifle along with an empty magazine.” NPS

Authorities have continued to work closely with local communities, urging residents to give up illegal firearms. The latest surrender points to growing cooperation between the public and security teams on the ground.
Curbing conflict
The operation is aimed at reducing cases of armed conflict, curbing insecurity, and creating a safer environment for residents across the county.
Security agencies have maintained that the exercise will continue as part of broader efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.
“Security agencies have maintained sustained engagement with local communities, emphasising the importance of voluntarily surrendering illegal firearms, and this action reflects the effectiveness of the sensitisation campaigns. These efforts are geared towards fostering long-term peace, reducing incidences of armed conflict, and improving overall security within the country.”
Voluntary surrender of firearms
In a statement by the National Police Service on the official X account on Saturday, April 11, 2026, the National Police Service announced the multi-agency team spearheading the peaceful disarmament exercise in the region.
At the same time, the recovery which was done on Friday, April 10, 2026, the officers noted that they recorded significant progress following the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms by five individuals.
“A multi-agency team spearheading the peaceful disarmament exercise in Turkana County yesterday recorded significant progress following the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms by five individuals,” NPS said.
