The music scene is grieving the death of rhumba legend Vieux Vivi Kalenga Nzanzi who died on Wednesday.

Vivi was one of the remaining three vocalists at the Orchestre Les Mangelepa band formed in 1976 in Lubumbashi, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Vivi and his band mates had an eclectic performance in their European tour in 2016 at Afrika Festival Hertme to celebrate 40 years.

Their hit song “Nyako Konya’’ carried the day as they showed their mastery in choreography despite advanced age.  They first came to Kenya as members of Orchestre Baba Nationale of Baba Gaston.

Ocherstre Baba Nationale arrived in Dar in 1972 and soon after started recording with the Tanzania Film Company and another company called Sindimba.

In Nairobi, they recorded “Affaire Zua” and “Mapenzi ya Peremende” at High Fidelity studios. Following differences, some members led by Kabila wa Kabanze Evany broke off from Orchestre Baba Nationale to form Orchestre Les Mangelepa.

In 1979 Mangelepa landed a tour of Malawi, which resulted in their other hit “Zikomo Malawi,” a live recording. When the tour ended they returned to Garden Square in Nairobi, and continued to cut records with EMI, Tobina, Jojo Records, among other labels.

The name Mangelepa was inspired by the French ‘Marque le pas’ (marking time). For years, the band was known for blending Congolese and Kenyan musical influences, creating a unique sound that has left a lasting impact.

Mangelepa was among bands that were attracted by the entertainment scene in Kenya at a time considered the golden era of Lingala music alongside other bands like  Super Mazembe, Baba Gaston and the soloist Samba Mapangala of the famous hits Vunja Mifupa, Marina  among others.

Music legend Gerry Otieno says that for the longest time Congolese artists have been drawn to Kenya due to its vibrant music scene, opportunities for collaboration, and a welcoming atmosphere.

“Kenya’s diverse culture and entertainment industry provide a platform for Congolese artists to showcase their talents and connect with audiences. Additionally, Kenya’s relative political stability and economic opportunities could contribute to their decision to settle.”
