The government has been urged to address the run-away corruption that has permeated virtually all public sectors if the country is to recover from the social and economic mess that it is currently facing.

The call was made by law scholar PLO Lumumba, former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara and former Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chair Sarah Serem.

Lumumba was speaking at Eldoret National Polytechnic during the closure of a two-day forum organised by a group of Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) professionals drawn from the North Rift region.

He regretted that the vice was most prevalent in state bodies that are headed by professionals.
Mega corruption

“The fight against corruption should not be left to bodies tasked to fight the vice but it should involve all Kenyans of goodwill if we expect our country to spur in all spheres of social and economic development,” said Lumumba.

“We have converged here today as professionals and members of the church to address issues pertaining to the rising cases of mega corruption, the main reason of this forum is about talking with our members who are also stakeholders in various public and private institutions to be in the forefront in the fight against corruption,” he added.

He said most government bodies are headed by professionals but regretted that they are the ones leading in the promotion of the vice, thus being cited as a major obstacle to weed out the monster in the entire public and private sectors.

Magara on his part argued that if the trend continues, it may deny the citizens their right to benefit from the public resources in terms of flagship development projects.

He implored the government to arrest and prosecute those found engaging in corrupt deals regardless of their political or religious affiliations, saying failure to tame the vice will derail the country economically.
