Reactions to Gachagua’s interim report on Wamunyoro meetings

Reactions are expected to emerge following an explosive interview by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua with vernacular radio and TV stations on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

In the interview, Gachagua disparaged the Kenya-Kwanza administration and revealed that voters from the Mount Kenya region had fallen out with President William Ruto and were out to oust him in the coming election.

“Our party is ready. It is in the showroom, the engine is brand new, the tyres are Michelin, and the driver is Gachagua—he won’t steer it off course. People are eager to know the name. The fifth month is when we will make the big reveal. We will begin opening branches, transitioning people from UDA, and firmly rooting them in our new home. We want all other communities to join us—we are offering them seats at the table. We have already allocated positions to some, and for those yet to be accommodated, this is their chance to come on board,” Gachagua said.

While Gachagua’s remarks were quickly rebutted by Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi who maintained that Ruto still held sway in the restive region despite his former deputy’s assertions suggesting otherwise.

However, the session is set to be saddled by a host of new challenges including the latest ruling which invalidated the Kenya-Kwanza majority position in parliament and questioned the position of National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula to hold the office since he has yet to resign from his Ford-Kenya party.

Milimani High Court on Friday, February 7, 2025, declared the Azimio coalition as the majority party in the National Assembly.

“By assigning Kenya Kwanza the 14 members of the parties without any reason and declaring Kenya Kwanza as the majority leader, it follows that the Speaker violated the Constitution,” the court ruled.
