Faith Odhiambo condemns attack on Rachel Wandeto, demands justice
Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has condemned the brutal attack on Rachel Wandeto, who was reportedly set ablaze in Kasarani.
Odhiambo has called for swift investigations and accountability for those responsible.
In a statement on Monday, May 17, 2026, Odhiambo described the incident as a heinous act of violence that violates constitutional protections on human dignity and freedom from violence.
“I condemn the heinous act of violence against Rachel Wandeto who was set ablaze in Kasarani. Such brutality is not only inhumane but undermines the constitutional promise of dignity and freedom from violence under Articles 27 and 29,” she said.
The former LSK president said the attack highlighted the persistent threats women continue to face in Kenya despite years of advocacy and policy interventions aimed at combating gender-based violence.
“This incident is a reminder that despite advocacy and policy interventions, women in Kenya face grave threats to their safety and lives,” Odhiambo stated.
She warned that societal tolerance of violence and lack of accountability continued to fuel such incidents.
“We must confront the uncomfortable truth that impunity and societal normalization of violence continue to enable these crimes,” she added.
Odhiambo called on the National Police Service to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that those behind the attack are arrested and prosecuted.
“I call upon the National Police Service to investigate and to ensure that all perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Accountability is non-negotiable,” she said.
She further urged state agencies to coordinate support for the victim, including medical care, legal assistance and protection mechanisms for women facing threats.
“All state agencies must coordinate to provide medical and legal support to the survivor while strengthening and providing protective mechanisms for all women at risk,” she said.
Odhiambo also warned against silence and inaction, saying failure to confront violence decisively would only embolden perpetrators.
“We must act decisively because silence and inaction only perpetuate the cycle of violence,” she added.
Her statement comes amid growing public outrage over the attack on Wandeto, which has drawn condemnation from political leaders, rights activists and government officials.
