The curtains have fallen one of the last surviving independence-era politicians and hero of second liberation, George Gregory Wilson Nthenge.
President Uhuru Kenyatta paid tribute to the former legislator describing him as a “maverick independence-era politician, former cabinet minister and businessman”.
“It is disheartening to learn of the passing away of George Nthenge, one of our country’s few remaining independence-era politicians, freedom fighter, and architect of our second liberation,” the President said.
Nthenge is remembered having been the last surviving member of the Lancaster House Conference that gave the country its first independence constitution. He was a member Legislative Council representing Machakos.
He will also be remembered for the role he played in the fight for multiparty democracy. He founded Forum for Restoration of Democracy (Ford) together with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga among other politicians.
His eldest son Ootto Edward Nthenge said his father died at their Buruburu home, where he had been recuperating after being discharged from the Nairobi Hospital.
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua said the nonagenarian died of Covid-19 complications.
“I am sad to learn of the passing of Hon. George Gregory Nthenge, at the age of 94, due to Covid-19 complications,” he tweeted.
