The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Erastus Ethekon, has outlined operational achievements recorded under his leadership during the recent electoral exercise, noting that the Commission’s focus on efficiency, transparency, and integrity paid off across the country.

Speaking during a November 27, 2025, by-election review on Monday, December 8, 2025, Ethekon praised the Commission staff, field officers, and partner agencies for delivering what he described as one of the most smoothly managed operations in recent years, contrary to violent incidents witnessed in the mini polls.

By-election review

The session brought together political parties, observers, security agencies, civil society, and the media. In his address, Ethekon provided an account of the electoral process. He outlined the Commission’s preparation efforts, including recruitment and training of officials, deployment of KIEMS kits, enforcement of the Electoral Code of Conduct and the management of multiple security environments across the 22 by-elections.

On the Rule of Law and Due Process, Ethekon said: “Everything we do as a Commission must follow due process without shortcuts, without speculation, and without theatrics. Our mandate must be anchored on facts, not noise. What doesn’t help the country is commentary from individuals meeting in corners, making unsubstantiated claims, and demanding action outside legal channels.”

Strong operational performance

Ethekon also highlighted several areas where the IEBC recorded notable success, including early opening of polling stations, KIEMS kits delivered over 99 per cent functionality, transparent counting and timely transmission of results, among others.

During the by-election, the Chairperson also acknowledged several hurdles the Commission faced. These included:

Voter apathy in some regions affected turnout: Attempts to influence or pressure election officials, which the Commission resisted firmly.

Logistical constraints are especially prevalent in remote areas with difficult terrain. Misinformation circulating online required rapid clarification and public communication. Isolated security incidents in select counties were managed in coordination with security agencies to prevent escalation.

Erastus Ethekon has also assured the public that each challenge was addressed promptly and professionally. He stressed that none of the incidents, whether logistical, security-related, or politically motivated, compromised the integrity of the vote.

Looking ahead

Ethekon has affirmed that the Commission will use the lessons learned to further strengthen future electoral processes. He said the Commission remains committed to improving technology, voter education, and operational planning to continue delivering credible, efficient elections.
