Estonia confirms plan to open embassy in Nairobi amid growing bilateral relations
Estonia has confirmed plans to officially open its embassy mission in Nairobi later this year, in a move expected to strengthen diplomatic relations, trade cooperation and technology partnerships between the two countries.
Speaking during an interview on a local station on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Daniel Schaer said the decision reflects Estonia’s growing interest in deepening bilateral ties with Kenya and expanding its diplomatic footprint within the East African region.
The ambassador noted that the opening of the Nairobi mission comes at a symbolic moment as Estonia marks 25 years since signing diplomatic relations with Kenya.
“We are a small country of about 1.3 million people, and that is why opening an embassy in Nairobi is very important for us,” Schaer said.
He further expressed optimism about relocating to Kenya later this year as the diplomatic mission officially begins operations.
“I am very happy to be based in Kenya. In the beginning of September, I will officially be based in Kenya after nearly 20 years of work,” he added.
Trade and technology cooperation
Schaer explained that the embassy will serve as a strategic hub for strengthening cooperation in trade, innovation, digital transformation and political engagement between the two nations.

He noted that Kenya’s growing influence as a regional economic and technological hub made Nairobi a natural choice for Estonia’s diplomatic presence in East Africa.
“It is very timely to open the embassy because we are also celebrating 50 years of relations with the European Union, and Estonia already has diplomatic presence in Nairobi,” Schaer stated.
The move comes as Estonia continues gaining international recognition for its advanced digital governance systems, innovation-driven economy and e-government services.
Growing global engagement
Analysts say the opening of the embassy signals Estonia’s broader strategy of increasing engagement with African countries, particularly in sectors linked to digital technology, education and economic cooperation.

The announcement also comes amid heightened geopolitical attention surrounding the Baltic region following recent drone-related security incidents involving Estonia and neighbouring countries.
Despite growing regional security concerns in Europe linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Estonia continues to strengthen international partnerships and expand its diplomatic relations globally.
The Nairobi embassy is expected to play a central role in facilitating future economic, diplomatic and cultural cooperation between Kenya and Estonia.
