For the second day in a row, Egerton University Vice Chancellor’s office remained out of bounds as lecturers protested a Nakuru court decision to reinstate Prof Rose Mwonya. 

The dons argued that Mwonya should not resume office after years of alleged malpractice and mismanagement. 

The lecturers who barricaded Mwonya’s office noted that they will not allow the VC back to her office on grounds that she was behind their woes. 

“The administration under Prof Mwonya’s leadership has destroyed the university financially and infrastructurally,” said University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Chairman Dr  Fredrick Mwangangi. 

The lecturers who have been on strike for the past one month over 40 percent salary cuts said they will only negotiate with the newly appointed vice chancellor,  proffessor Isaac Kibwage.

“We are glad that the acting vice chancellor has heard our cries. Within a few days of negotiations, we have signed a return-to-work formula,” said Mwangangi. 

In the return-to-work formula, the dons have agreed that they are to receive accrued salary arrears dating back to April this year within  13 months. The institution is also set to to start remitting full salaries  effective November 30.  

 Prof Mwonya on November 30 obtained the order against the university council’s decision to send her on terminal leave, pending her retirement on January 12 .   Mwonya’s attempt to access the university yesterday was foiled as the dons camped at the gates. 

In a letter to the university’s Transport Officer, Mwonya maintained that she was still in charge and demanded the reinstatement of her official vehicle. 

“Kindly avail the Vice Chancellor’s official vehicle to my driver today (Thursday),” the letter read in part.
