Edwin Sifuna links Kyalo Mbobu’s murder to Kenya’s state of insecurity
By Joel Masibo, September 10, 2025Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has stated that the killing of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road in Nairobi is a pointer to the country’s state of insecurity.
Taking to his X account on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Sifuna recalled his relationship with the deceased lawyer in the country’s legal corridors, describing him as charming and fair.
”Kyalo Mbobu taught me the law of evidence at the University of Nairobi. I also had the opportunity to appear before him at the PPDT when he was Chair. Charming and fair, he also took time to mentor and impart life lessons to many of us young lawyers,” Sifuna said.
Mbobu was shot dead near the junction at Galleria, with preliminary reports indicating that the lawyer was accosted by assailants riding on a motorcycle, who opened fire on him before fleeing the scene of the crime after completing their mission.
Senator Sifuna added that the circumstances around Kyalo Mbobu’s killing are worrying, coming at a time when the country is dealing with insecurity challenges.
”The circumstances of his death are heartbreaking, painful, and worrying, especially in light of recent similar executions, a pointer to the state of insecurity in the country, but what is life? I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in this difficult time.”

Before meeting his demise, Kyalo Mbobu had been in the legal industry for 30 years, as well as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, where his contributions to criminal law have been well-documented.
Following his death, legal practitioners and national leaders have all condemned the murder of Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, all calling for a speedy investigation and justice served.
LSK condemns murder
Also, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate the killing. In a statement on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, Odhiambo urged the DCI to move with speed to identify and bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice.
“As we make sense of life without this legal giant, the legal profession stands petrified at the dire state of safety for advocates,” Faith Odhiambo said.
“While we await preliminary reports on the identity of the perpetrator and the motive, we are apprehensive that this has all the markings of a pre-determined assassination. Too often, advocates have been victimised and targeted for the work that they do.
