Duale warns of crisis in Uhuru transition
Garissa Township MP Aden Duale now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to fill the position of the Secretary to the Cabinet which he said plays a crucial role in transition after the August election.
In a statement, Duale (pictured) says Article 154 of the Constitution is clear on the role played by the holder of the position, especially in the assumption of office of a new president.
Juma rejection
The position has been vacant since 2015 when the National Assembly rejected President Uhuru Kenyatta’s nominee for the position Dr Monica Juma.
Juma, who was later appointed Cabinet Secretary, had previously served in the position in acting capacity.
“The time is fast ticking and I do hope that the relevant bodies will move with speed and put in place the leadership of the Committee,” Duale said.
He stated that the Assumption of the Office of the President Committee, if constituted today, would not have a chairperson.
“A President-Elect for this year’s General-Election shall be sworn in on the First Tuesday following the 14 days after the declaration of the presidential election results if no petition will be filed; or the 7 days following the date which the court renders a decision,” Duale said.
