Drivers halt journeys amid Eldoret protest anxiety

By , July 2, 2024

Anti-riot police secured the entry and exit routes within Eldoret’s Central Business District (CBD) in anticipation of hundreds of anti-government protesters planning a peaceful march into the town.

Earlier in the morning, drama unfolded near the Western matatu terminus along the Eldoret-Webuye highway as police clashed with over 300 rowdy youths.

The youthful protesters, mainly from the settlement areas of Kidiwa and Kamukunji, were repulsed as they attempted to enter the town, chanting anti-government slogans.

County offices fortified

The Uasin Gishu County government premises were declared a no-go zone, with scores of county enforcement officers supported by regular police cordoning off all entry and exit gates.

This preemptive move aimed to prevent a repeat of last week’s violent protests, during which property worth over Sh100 million was damaged or stolen.

Most streets in the town remained deserted, with a heavy police presence patrolling in Land Rovers and Land Cruisers.
