DPP sends condolences to Dr Obwaka’s family

The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) has sent its messages of condolences to the family of the late Nairobi Hospital official and gynaecologist, Dr Job Obwaka, who passed on after suddenly falling ill on May 1, 2026.

The DPP sent the condolences during a mention of a case where the deceased Obwaka was charged alongside Chris Bichange, Samson Kinyanjui, and Valerie Akinyi with failure to lodge the company’s 2024 financial statements with the registrar.

Appearing before Milimani Principal Magistrate Theresa Nyangena on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, prosecutor Murage told the court that the DPP sends their sympathies to the family of the late doctor and the defence team.

“Your honour, perhaps before we take another date, we extended our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family,” prosecutor Murage stated.

On March 31, 2026, the pre-trial of the criminal proceedings against the officials was postponed after the High Court issued conservatory orders temporarily barring their arrest and prosecution.

The defence lawyers, led by Sam Nyaberi, produced the High Court conservatory orders issued by Justice Bahati Mwamuye that also barred the state from interfering in a dispute over the governance of the hospital.

When the matter came up before Magistrate Nyangena, the court was to be updated on whether the High Court orders had been extended, stopping the further prosecution of the accused officials.

The defence team, led by Danstan Omari, informed the court that they had not been able to follow up on the High Court matter following the demise of Dr Obwaka, and thus they were seeking another mention date.

“Your honour, we have not been able to deal with the High Court matter considering the passing of the third accused person (Dr Obwaka); we shall be seeking another mention date to be able to follow up on the High Court matter,” Lawyer Omari submitted.

Magistrate Nyangena granted the defence their request and scheduled the matter to be mentioned on June 18, 2026.

Notably, she directed that the other accused persons (Chris Bichange, Samson Kinyanjui, and Valarie Akinyi) appear in court that day.
